Why a personalized custom steel bed frame?
How’d we get here?
My son needed a new bed, graduating to a full sized mattress. Seemed like a great way to flex and make a personalized custom bed frame. I kept the design simple, and strong. The build went together very easily and again it is crazy strong. Nary a wobble, creak, or squeak. It feels like a single piece of steel, no exaggeration.
My son went with his favorite color at the time. It’s always green, but memory tells says the shade changes. Hunter green was written in the stars, and he wanted a tall bed. Green and tall was the call, and this was the answer.
Personalizing with his name was just something I needed to do. I wanted to, and while it makes it a little silly for someone else in the future. That was the point. It was made by his father for him and him alone.
The frame itself will outlive all of us, and easily qualifies as a buy it for life item. It’s an heirloom piece albeit its simple design.
Personalized custom bed frame – the build
This was a simple plan for a custom bed I sketched out on paper and rolled with. The rest came as I built. I knew where the plate work was going to go before I started and I never sketched it. I took for granted that I’d add some tabs to allow bolt mounting.

the materials used to build a personalized custom bed frame
2″x2″x.120″ make up the frame and rails. 1.5″x1.5″x1/4″ make up the support to cradle the box spring. Some 1″x1″x.120″ make up the trim that surrounds the personalized plate work. I used some 1/4″ plate for the gussets or sheer tabs. (This is where the bolts go to hold everything together).
For the personalization I simply picked a font I thought was handsome. Random fonts need modifications to work with CNC. Continuous loops will drop out and you’ll loose the detail. Cutting an O for instance you get a hole instead of a O. The machine cuts the center of the O and then the outer of the O and oh poo. It’s a hole.
In this case you’ll notice the centers of the a and the e for instance have little notches at the top connecting the center of the letter to the plate as a whole. These are those little modifications that are needed.

I will be the first to admit it is a simple design built upon my knowledge of structural steel used in buildings. With that said, I built it similar to how a steel frame building is constructed. It’s built to survive an atomic bomb blast. It makes NO noise. Loading it with two kids and a parent for reading before bed and it doesn’t make a peep. I’m not worried now per se, but the teenage years. Oy vey.
You’ll notice all the welds are visible on this bed frame. This was done intentionally. Typically in this type of work the welds are flattened and smoothed via grinding. I think most are used to seeing this without knowing it. Nothing wrong with it, it gives a clean finish made for the masses. Plus it hides hideous welds and poor fit-up. I focused on good fit-up to prepare for nice looking welds that could be shown off. After I’m gone I want my son and his children and so on to see their father’s/grandfathers/great-grandfathers hands. Too see me is to know me in some weird way.

Because of proper planning and execution this is essentially a full-penetration weld on 100% of the head and foot board. The runners are stout! Joint design being what it is. We don’t have the same open root welds of the head and foot boards.
Here’s our handmade bed frame hot bolted for transportation. It was easier to strap down assembled than it would have been in pieces.

We’re jumping over the painting process. It wasn’t glamorous. Overall the paint looks good. I took terrible photos of the process. A little internet magic and boom – we are assembled. You can see his little man bed in the background. It is an upgrade for my guy. You’ll notice how tall it is in comparison. I put 12″ of space between the floor and the underside of the mattress area. This puts him way up off the floor. At about mid-thigh on an “average” adult. He gets his tall bed, and mom gets places to hide totes. We’ve got totes on totes on totes, and we’re always looking for a place for… totes.

Sprinkle on some more magic and everything has been moved and stowed away. The bed is made and the room is clean.
Personalized custom bed frame – the final look around.
The personalized custom bed frame comes to life!

I unfortunately scuffed the paint man-handling the mattress by myself. Hindsight always tells me to be a little more patient!

Take a look at these simple yet incredibly robust mounts. Aside from strong individual parts, the mounting solution is what gives this thing its incredible strength.

So there you have it, my first personalized custom steel bed frame. A gift from a father to his son. I’d be elated to help create the frame of your dreams. Or the frame of your specific requirements. Anything is possible!
